First Upwork Job: $468 for a Simple Cryptocurrency Task

First Upwork Job showcases the honest experiences of students of Workupvarsity who got their first Upwork Job. Today, we speak with Johnmiracle Ejikeme, a Web3 full-stack marketing consultant and founder of Workupvarsity. Johnmiracle started freelancing in Upwork in the year 2021, and he's currently a millionaire freelancer. Now, he talks to us about how he got his first Upwork Job.

Hi Johnmiracle

Hello, let’s proceed.

Nice to meet you Mr. Johnmiracle Ejikeme, Can You Introduce Yourself Briefly?

Yeah, I help businesses in visibility marketing, growth, and sales using inbound and outbound marketing strategies. However, I’m versatile as a professional freelancer and can function professionally as a content writer, WordPress Dev, and brand designer.

I have been able to build a strong personal brand and reputation as a freelancer, and that’s what inspired me to start Workupvarsity Academy to lead upcoming freelancers, providing them with the support and resources they need to be successful in their respective fields.

That’s quite an inspiring self Introduction, we can’t wait to know you better through this interview.

In your Introduction, you mentioned that you are a pro-Upwork Freelancer and the Founder of WorkupVarsity a Freelancing Academy, can you tell us what Freelancing is in a nutshell?

Freelancing is a type of work where individuals offer their professional services on a project-by-project basis, rather than working as a full-time employee for a single employer.

Freelancers are independent contractors who are self-employed and are responsible for finding their clients, negotiating the terms of their work, and completing the projects they are hired to do.

As freelancers, we can often set our schedules and work from anywhere, making it a flexible and attractive option for many people. Freelancers can work in a variety of fields, including design, writing, programming, marketing, and more.

Wow, that is quite an intriguing response and your explanation is an eye-opener.

Tell us, what inspired you to choose freelancing as a career path?

During my second year of study at the university, my mom who seems to be my key sponsor became financially distressed as her key business was involved in a fire accident without leaving any valuables behind.

It was dawn on me that I had to find a way to survive, so instead of complaining I decided to get a job at school to raise capital to finance my entrepreneurial journey, and then from research, I discovered that identifying as a freelancer I can work for anyone, and from anywhere. Therefore, I dive deeper into freelancing.

Definitely, a great inspiration.

When you started, was the Journey a smooth one?

It wasn’t a smooth ride because I was figuring it out by myself, I did intense research and study. I can remember when I had to travel from Yenagoa to Port Harcourt to a paid event hosted by South South Media West.

In the 5 days, I spent almost N1300 daily on transport fare from my sister’s place where I took shelter.

I learned from several keynote speakers at the event, but on the 4th or 5th day of the event probably can’t remember when exactly – Emmanuel Akpe talked about Upwork Freelancing, and since that day, I have become a die-hard Upwork freelancer, and today all his history.

Really?

Tell us the challenges you faced then and why you didn’t quit

There are so many challenges, but the most common include:

  • Working space
  • Data subscription
  • Power supply
  • Adequate working tools
  • Location
  • Financial system

However, I didn’t quit because these problems needed to be solved, and I was confident if I solved this problem I would be successful as a freelancer, and I did – at least if not all.

That was a big challenge and I know beginners might also face such.

How did you overcome these challenges? Please give us the steps you took.

From my proceed, I was determined to solve the most pressing issues I faced so I got high-quality computers and smartphones, rented personal office space, data is no longer my problem, and I’m using solar and not bothered about PHCN.

Amazing, it’s a lot of sacrifices.

When you cracked the Freelancing code, Tell us about your first job.

My first job was a simple task on cryptocurrency and I was paid $468. It was using Ethereum wallets to do like and follow a particular NFT on the rarible.com marketplace. It’s actually an easy task, and I bet just anyone can do it even a total beginner by just following simple instructions.

Well, I got the job through an Upwork invite. That’s why I’m really focused on Upwork because they look out for freelancers, and are ready to help freelancers win.

Well, I am glad just as if it’s me.

From then onward, how has your journey been so far?

The journey has been more intense now, and I have built a good reputation and portfolio samples. With words from my past clients, I use them to source new clients. However, Workupvarsity is now part of this journey and I look forward to seeing Workupvarsity raise vibrant successful freelancers.

You mentioned WorkupVarsity, which is a big project. Tell us about WorkupVarsity.
