First Upwork Job: $100 As A Shopify Website Developer

First Upwork Job showcases the honest experiences of students of Workupvarsity who got their first Upwork Job. Today, we speak with Mr. Godwin an E-commerce expert. Now, he talks to us about how he got his first Upwork Job.

Good day, Mr. Godwin it is nice to have you here. Can you introduce yourself briefly?

My name is Abosi Godwin Nzubechi, a result-oriented E-Commerce expert, currently specializing in Shopify Store development and marketing.

That is great, I can’t wait to hear more!

Tell us, why did you choose Freelancing as a career path?

If there’s one person on this planet Earth who doesn’t like to be controlled by anyone, it’s me.

I love the working system involved in freelancing, where you choose who you work with, when you work, how you work, and where you want to work from.

That’s exactly the kind of life I want to lead.

And being someone who is passionate about technology and making money online, after wasting my time and resources for 1 year trying to make money online through free Bitcoin mining websites, I came to believe the proverb that says “When something is free, you will be used for the exchange”.

And I came to realize that something must be given to gain something.

When did you start your Freelancing Journey?

joined Upwork and LinkedIn freelancing in 2020, but I later dumped them because I didn’t know how to make use of the two platforms.

In 2021 I joined the Fiverr freelancing game and finally didn’t succeed.

That’s quite an interesting start.

When you started, was the journey smooth?

No

It is never smooth for anyone though. What were your challenges?

When I started I had no knowledge or experience in any skill that I wanted to offer, all I knew was that I could make money through the Internet.

I don’t even have a good phone then talk more on a laptop.

Did these challenges stop you at any point?

Yes, they did.

Remember I quit Upwork after 2020?, and after 2021 I stopped Fiverr too.

I am glad you gave a sincere answer, it shows the extent freelancing at the beginning with proper strategy can be discouraging.

What steps did you take to overcome these challenges?

When I discovered that something must be exchanged to get something, which in this case is skills and money.

I had to go back and fill myself up with some skills I could use to solve someone’s problem

And that’s the only thing I did because my enthusiasm to work and make money online is still intact.

When you experienced a breakthrough, Tell us about your first Job on Upwork

In the year 2022, I said to myself that I’ll do real-time hustling in the streets.

But one fateful evening after the daily struggles, I opened my Facebook app to chat with some friends.

As I was scrolling through my timeline on Facebook, I saw a post made by Johnmiracle Ejikeme about Upwork that piqued my interest.

I added him up, we chatted and he told me about Workup Varsity.

I decided to try Upwork again by myself, and I got access to a free Upwork course from Udemy. After going through the course, it’s time to implement what I learned.

I opened my Upwork account again after two years of abandonment and I noticed that Upwork has been awarding me 10  connects per month.

There the journey began, I started sending proposals day and night until I spent more than 180 connections.

There then, it dawns on me that something is wrong. I went back to John who referred me to Gift, I asked her for some guidelines on how to optimize my profile, and she provided me with some vital information.

Later on, I decided to become a full member of their freelancing community, so that she could mentor me personally.

After going through the courses provided to me, I went back to Upwork to implement them.

Some weeks later, I sent a proposal down the line, the client messaged me back, and we went into an interview more than two times, I passed the interviews and he awarded me the contract.

Wow, I am so happy to hear that.

Would you recommend Workup Varsity to the public who wants to become successful Freelancers?

Yeah sure, Workupvarsity is currently the leading freelancing community in Africa as a whole. Anyone desiring to work online as a freelancer should try his/her best to join the team and see his story change for good

Your conviction says it all.

Any final words?

Yeah, I would like to let you know that consistency is the only thing that got me this far. And that you have to be consistent in anything you have a vision for.

I see myself as the top e-commerce business development expert on both LinkedIn and Upwork in the next three years. Then I started learning and connecting with some like-minded people.

Now I have gotten some contracts from both platforms.

Another thing is that networking is very important to the success of any project or business in this life.

And that’s one of the main things Workupvarsity is doing that I love very much, connecting people with different beliefs, agendas, experiences, and skills together.

No matter the kind of situation you’re in, there’s someone who has passed through it that can guide you. thanks.

Thank you Mr. Godwin for granting us the opportunity to interview you. I appreciate your sincerity and I must say your journey is inspiring.

Our dear reader, I hope this interview motivates you!
